Qasr Kharana is an early Umayyad-era desert complex located in the eastern Jordanian desert. The rectangular, fortress-like building dates to the early 8th century CE and is one of the best-preserved of the Umayyad desert ‘castles’ outside major urban centres.
The complex contains a series of vaulted rooms around a central courtyard and solid external walls with projecting corner towers. The mudbrick structure sits on a stone base and retains internal plaster and some decorative features that illustrate early Islamic architectural practices.
Scholars place its construction in the first decades of the Umayyad caliphate, and its design is commonly compared with other desert complexes built for administrative, residential or caravan-support purposes. Over time it has been used as a landmark for travelers crossing the Syrian-Arabian desert.
Qasr Kharana lies in the eastern desert of Jordan, east of Amman along routes that historically linked the capital with desert regions to the east and north.

How to Get to Qasr Kharana
Qasr Kharana (Quseir Kharana) is a desert castle east of Amman, reached most easily by private car or tour. It lies off the main desert road east of the capital (the Amman-Azraq/desert highway corridor) and is roughly a one‑hour drive from Amman (around 60-80 km depending on route). There is little or no regular public transport to the site, so visitors normally go by car, taxi or organized excursion.

- Qasr Kharana sits on the Amman-Azraq desert axis, so plan arrival for late afternoon when temperatures ease and the building's sandstone warms for photography.
- There is roadside parking by the site entrance; allow 20-40 minutes to walk the exterior and enter the courtyard-explore the interior rooms and upper levels where accessible for the best sense of the castle's layout.
- Many visitors drive straight past-take time to study the carved stucco and masonry details in the arches and rooms, which are better appreciated with a short guided stop.
