Qantir
Administrative Seat Archaeological site identified with ancient Pi-Ramesses
Rural site in Egypt’s Sharqia Governorate associated with the Ramesside-period city Pi-Ramesses. Archaeological trenches and artefacts attract historians and visitors interested in New Kingdom pharaonic remains.
Qantir is a modern place name for an archaeological area in Sharqia Governorate in Egypt that is associated with the ancient city of Pi-Ramesses, the Ramesside capital. The site is important for understanding New Kingdom urban and industrial activity in the eastern Nile Delta.
Excavated areas include extensive mudbrick foundations, workshop areas and large quantities of pottery and worked stone - evidence of an urban centre with administrative and industrial functions. The site is visited mainly by researchers and specialist tours interested in New Kingdom archaeology; visible remains are less monumental than stone temples but cover a wide area.
The site was occupied in the New Kingdom, especially during the 19th Dynasty under Ramesses II, and later declined as Nile branches shifted and settlement patterns in the Delta changed. Modern archaeological work in the 20th and 21st centuries has clarified its identification with Pi-Ramesses and documented its layout and material culture.
Qantir lies in the eastern Nile Delta within Sharqia Governorate, on agricultural plain terrain not far from the better-known site of Tell el-Dab’a (the ancient city of Avaris). Access is from the regional road network serving the Delta.
- Pi-Ramesses: Long identified with the ancient Egyptian royal city Pi-Ramesses, the main capital during the reign of Ramesses II in the 19th Dynasty.
- Archaeological remains: Excavations have revealed large extents of mudbrick architecture, workshops, and abundant pottery fragments dating to the Ramesside period.
How to Get to Qantir #
Qantir lies roughly 80-100 km northeast of central Cairo, near the city of Zagazig. The usual route is by car along the Cairo-Suez highway turning north-east toward Zagazig, then following local roads toward Faqous and Qantir (allow 1.5-2 hours from Cairo depending on traffic).
Public transit is limited: take a microbus or private service to Zagazig (from Cairo’s Turgoman or al-Munira bus stations) and arrange a taxi from Zagazig for the final 15-25 km to the site.
Tips for Visiting Qantir #
- Visit early morning to see the site in cooler light and avoid agricultural traffic on the single-lane roads nearby.
- Hire a licensed Egyptologist guide in Zagazig - the layers here are confusing and a good guide points out reused blocks that ended up in Tanis.
- Combine Qantir with a stop at nearby Tell el-Retabah and the village museum in Zagazig; most visitors miss the small finds that tell the city's daily life.
