The Qalawun complex is a late 13th century Mamluk funerary and charitable complex in historic Cairo, founded by Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun in 1284-1285 CE. It combines a mausoleum, a madrasa and a bimaristan (hospital) in a single monumental ensemble.

The complex is noted for its monumental façade, large ribbed dome over the tomb chamber and finely carved stone and inlaid marble decoration. The bimaristan and madrasa are arranged contiguous to the mausoleum, making the building a compact example of Mamluk royal-endowment architecture.

Founded and financed by Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun of the Bahri Mamluk dynasty, the complex was built as a funerary monument and an act of public charity. It remained an important urban landmark through subsequent centuries and has undergone conservation to preserve its stonework and decorative elements.

The complex sits in the Bayn al-Qasrayn quarter of historic Cairo, within the area commonly called Islamic Cairo and close to the Khan el-Khalili market and other medieval monuments. It is in the central Cairo urban fabric and is accessible from the city’s historic core.

  • Architectural significance: Located in the Bayn al-Qasrayn sector of historic Cairo, the façade and dome are among the most complete surviving examples of Mamluk monumental architecture in the city.
  • Best viewing time: The complex was founded in the late 13th century and retains a high degree of original stonework, marble and carved wood finishings that are best seen in natural daylight.

What to See #

  • Mausoleum, madrasa and hospital: The complex comprises a funerary mausoleum, an adjacent madrasa (religious school) and a bimaristan (hospital) arranged along a single monumental façade facing the historic street network of medieval Cairo.
  • Architectural components: The mausoleum contains the funerary chamber with a large ribbed dome and richly inlaid paneling; the madrasa includes classroom spaces and small prayer areas dating to the original foundation.
  • Bimaristan (hospital): The bimaristan is a purpose-built medieval hospital attached to the complex; it originally provided medical care and lodging for patients as part of the foundation's charitable endowment.
