Qal'at Bani Hammad

Qal’at Bani Hammad is the archaeological site of an 11th-century fortified city and former capital of the Hammadid dynasty in north-central Algeria, established in 1007. The ruins include palaces, a large mosque, a minaret and defensive walls and are recognised for their preservation of medieval North African urban fabric.

Visitors encounter stone foundations, palace enclosures and the remains of monumental religious architecture; the site provides tangible examples of Hammadid building techniques and city layout. Archaeological remains include decorative stucco fragments and foundation plans that inform studies of Maghreb medieval architecture.

Founded by members of the Hammadid dynasty as a royal capital in the early 11th century, the site was occupied for roughly a century before decline and abandonment during political upheavals in the region. Excavations and conservation work have documented its history and material culture.

The site sits inland in Bordj Bou Arréridj Province on a high plain of north-central Algeria, set among rolling terrain rather than on a coastal plain, and is accessed from regional roads leading from nearby towns.
