Qal’at al-Bahrain is a coastal archaeological complex on Bahrain Island identified as the ancient harbour and capital of the Dilmun civilisation and inscribed as a World Heritage site for its long sequence of occupation. The site comprises a large stratified mound capped by a fort.

The site was a major centre of the Dilmun culture from the 3rd millennium BCE and later served as an important regional harbour and administrative centre under successive states. Systematic excavations in the 20th century uncovered the multi-period sequence and confirmed the site’s central role in ancient Gulf trade.

Qal’at al-Bahrain sits on the northern coast of Bahrain Island near modern urban areas within the Bahrain Capital Governorate, positioned on the island’s coastal plain close to the Persian Gulf shoreline.

  • Dilmun remains: Excavations have revealed remains dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE, identifying the site with the ancient Dilmun trading polity referenced in Mesopotamian texts.
  • On-site museum: A visitor interpretation centre and museum adjacent to the site present finds from archaeological campaigns and explain the sequence of occupation.
