Qalaat al-Madiq

Qalaat al-Madiq is a town and fortified site in Syria’s Hama Governorate, located beside the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Apamea. The modern town is notable for its medieval citadel which overlooks the nearby Roman-era ruins.

The area contains the extensive ruins of Apamea, where a colonnaded street of roughly 2 kilometres and other large Roman structures are visible; the citadel sits above these remains and offers panoramic views of the Orontes valley. People visit the site for archaeology and landscape views rather than urban amenities.

Apamea was established in the Hellenistic period and became a major Roman city; the citadel and later medieval structures were built on the area’s elevated positions. Over centuries the site has seen successive phases of occupation, destruction, and reuse through antiquity and the medieval era.

Qalaat al-Madiq sits on a hill above the Orontes valley in western Hama Governorate, adjacent to the flat plain where the Roman city was laid out. The location places the site within a largely rural and agricultural landscape centered on the river valley.
