Pyramid of Sahure
Archaeological Site Old Kingdom pyramid of Pharaoh Sahure, Abusir necropolis
The Pyramid of Sahure at Abusir is a Fifth Dynasty funerary monument; archaeology enthusiasts visit its ruined complex for relief fragments and the surrounding necropolis.
The Pyramid of Sahure is a Fifth Dynasty Egyptian pyramid located at the royal necropolis of Abusir, north of Saqqara in the Giza Governorate. It belongs to Pharaoh Sahure and is notable for its associated mortuary complex and decorated reliefs.
The complex included a pyramid, a mortuary temple with extensive relief work, a causeway and valley installations used in funerary processions. The mortuary temple’s relief scenes were important sources for understanding royal ideology and trade contacts of the period.
Constructed in the early Fifth Dynasty, the complex was part of a shift in royal cemetery layout that saw the concentration of several Fifth Dynasty pyramids at Abusir. Over the millennia the pyramid and its temple have suffered reuse, collapse and excavation but remain important to Egyptology and archaeological study.
The pyramid stands within the Abusir necropolis on the west bank of the Nile, between the better-known fields of Giza and Saqqara.
- Archaeological significance: Part of the Abusir necropolis, the pyramid's complex is important for its relief-decorated mortuary temple which provided information on early Fifth Dynasty art and religion.
What to See #
- Mortuary temple: Mortuary temple complex associated with the pyramid that originally displayed relief decoration and served ritual functions for the king's funerary cult.
- Causeway and valley structures: Causeway and valley features that linked the pyramid to lower-lying processional and access areas of the necropolis.

- Enter the Abusir necropolis from the site road (Abusir village side) and plan your visit as a separate stop from Giza-most tourists skip Abusir entirely, so you'll have far more space to explore.
- Hire a knowledgeable Egyptologist guide or join a specialist tour to fully appreciate the mortuary temple remains and the often‑overlooked wall reliefs and papyri finds that are hard to interpret on your own.
