Pyramid of Merenre
Archaeological Site Ancient Old Kingdom pyramid of Pharaoh Merenre
An Old Kingdom royal tomb attributed to Pharaoh Merenre, the Pyramid of Merenre draws Egyptology visitors exploring the Giza and Saqqara necropolises and their lesser‑visited monuments.
The Pyramid of Merenre is an Old Kingdom royal pyramid built for Pharaoh Merenre Nemtyemsaf I of Egypt’s Sixth Dynasty. It is located within the Saqqara necropolis in Giza Governorate and is one of the smaller Sixth Dynasty pyramids.
The site presents the ruined superstructure and visible substructure remains within the larger Saqqara complex. Expect modest exposed masonry and archaeological traces rather than a towering intact pyramid; it is visited as part of wider Saqqara tours.
Constructed as the burial monument for Merenre Nemtyemsaf I during the Sixth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, the pyramid served as the pharaoh’s tomb. Over time the outer casing stones were removed and the monument fell into ruin, leaving primarily its internal features and foundation for archaeologists to study.
Sited in the Saqqara area of the Giza Governorate, the pyramid sits within the extensive necropolis south of Cairo and is visited in conjunction with other Saqqara monuments. Access is typically by road from Cairo or nearby Giza sites.
- Access: Part of the Saqqara necropolis complex and typically far less crowded than the nearby pyramids of Giza and Dahshur, so visits are often quieter and require travel via Saqqara.
- State of ruins: Remains are primarily the ruined core and substructure rather than an intact outer casing, so there is limited above-ground monumentality to view.
