Pyramid Lake (Nevada)

Pyramid Lake is a large closed-basin lake in northwestern Nevada on lands of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, known for its distinctive limestone tufa formations and desert setting. The lake is the remnant of prehistoric Lake Lahontan and is an important cultural and ecological resource.

Visitors come to view tufa towers along the shoreline, to fish for native cutthroat trout and whitefish where permitted, and to observe waterfowl at protected islands and coves. Interpretive points and tribal-managed facilities provide information about the lake’s natural history and cultural significance.

The lake developed as the Great Basin drained after the end of the last ice age and has supported indigenous communities for millennia; it continues to be a center for tribal cultural life and resource stewardship. Modern management balances ecological protection, tribal rights, and recreational use.

Pyramid Lake lies in the Nevada basin north of the Reno area, within the state’s desert landscape and reachable by road from regional highways that connect to nearby towns and cities.
