Religious Site Qing-era temple complex modeled after Lhasa's Potala Palace
Built in Chengde during the Qing dynasty, Putuo Zongcheng Temple copies elements of Lhasa’s Potala Palace; tourists come for Tibetan Buddhist architecture, painted halls and festival occasions.
Putuo Zongcheng Temple is an 18th-century Qing dynasty Buddhist temple complex in Chengde, Hebei province, built in a Tibetan style and modelled on Lhasa’s Potala Palace. The complex was completed in the 1770s and served imperial ritual and diplomatic functions for the Qing court.
Visitors encounter a series of halls, chapels and courtyards arranged on a stepped layout that echoes Tibetan palace architecture, with painted woodwork, stone stairways and gilded details in major halls. The complex is one of several outer temples around Chengde built to house and host visiting Mongol and Tibetan dignitaries.
Constructed under the Qianlong Emperor in the mid to late 18th century, the temple was part of the imperial program of temple-building around Chengde and remains one of the best-preserved examples of Qing-era Tibetan-style religious architecture in northern China.
The temple stands near the city of Chengde in Hebei province, northeast of Beijing, and forms part of the wider Mountain Resort and temple ensemble set in a hilly, park-like landscape.
- UNESCO World Heritage: Part of the Chengde Mountain Resort and its outlying temples, which were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
