Puruvesi Lake

Puruvesi is a lake in the South Savo region of eastern Finland and forms part of the larger Lake Saimaa system. It is noted locally for clear water and an island-studded shoreline.

The lake’s fractured coastline creates many sheltered bays and passages used for boating and fishing, and cottage tourism is common along its shores. The landscape is dominated by rocky shores, forested islands and narrow channels.

Like the rest of the Saimaa basin, Puruvesi was shaped by glacial processes at the end of the last Ice Age and has long been used by local communities for fishing and transport. Contemporary use emphasizes recreation and nature-based tourism.

Puruvesi lies within Finland’s South Savo region and is one of the eastern components of the Saimaa lake complex, accessible from regional towns in the area.
