Puning Temple (Puning Si) is a large Qing dynasty Buddhist temple in Hebei province, located near the imperial Mountain Resort at Chengde. It was constructed in the mid-18th century and is known for its large wooden statue of Guanyin.
Commissioned in the mid-1700s as part of the Chengde temple group built during the Qianlong emperor’s reign, the complex served imperial ritual needs and accommodated visiting Tibetan and Mongol dignitaries. It has been maintained as a cultural and religious site and is part of the Chengde Mountain Resort and its temples ensemble.
Puning Temple sits in the Chengde area of Hebei Province, northeast of Beijing, adjacent to the Mountain Resort and forming part of the outer temple ring accessed from Chengde city.
- Big wooden statue: The temple houses a large wooden statue of Guanyin measuring over 20 metres in height, one of the tallest wooden Buddhist statues in China.
- Imperial temple group: Built in the mid-18th century as part of the Chengde ceremonial and religious sites, it is one of the major 'Outer Temples' surrounding the imperial Mountain Resort.

- Main Hall with wooden Guanyin statue: The Daxiong Baodian (Main Hall) contains a large wooden statue of the Bodhisattva associated with the temple and serves as the principal worship hall.
- Temple complex and courtyards: Surrounding temple courtyards and subsidiary halls form part of the complex of the Eight Outer Temples near the Chengde Mountain Resort.
How to Get to Puning Temple #
Puning Temple is in Chengde city, about 230 km northeast of Beijing. From Chengde Railway Station a taxi or local bus will take 15-25 minutes to reach the temples cluster (the Mountain Resort area). Many visitors arrive on organized day tours from Beijing or use regional buses; Chengde city is also served by long-distance trains from Beijing.

- Hire a local guide or join a guided circuit to learn the temple's Manchu-era history and the Qianlong Emperor's connection to Chengde.
- Allow time to view the 22.28 m wooden Buddha quietly; flash photography is sometimes restricted.
- Combine a visit with the nearby Putuo Zongcheng Temple and the Chengde Mountain Resort to understand the imperial complex.
