Puncak Jaya
Mountain Highest island peak in Oceania, glaciated summit
Indonesia’s Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid) is the highest island peak in the world; glaciers cap its limestone towers in Papua. Technical climbers attempt challenging ascents to reach the summit.
Puncak Jaya, often called Carstensz Pyramid, is the highest peak of the Sudirman Range in Central Papua, Indonesia, with a summit elevation of 4,884 metres. It is the highest point on the island of New Guinea and the highest mountain in Indonesia and Australasia.
The summit is a steep, technical rock peak historically ringed by small glaciers and ice fields that have diminished significantly in recent decades. The standard approaches are remote and require technical climbing ability, logistical planning and government permits.
The first recorded ascent of the summit was in 1962 during an expedition led by Heinrich Harrer. Since then the mountain has been a destination for climbers attempting the highest peaks of each continental region.
Puncak Jaya sits in the central highlands of Papua within dense tropical mountain terrain, comparatively close to large-scale mining operations in the region and accessible only via long overland treks or helicopter approaches.
