Pumapunku is a monumental stone construction that forms part of the Tiwanaku archaeological complex near Lake Titicaca in western Bolivia. It is renowned for massive, precisely cut stone blocks and complex masonry that have drawn archaeological interest for its engineering techniques.

The surviving remains include large dressed blocks with finely worked joints and distinctive H-shaped connectors, arranged on raised terraces and platforms. The size and finish of the masonry are among the site’s most notable features and contribute to its importance within the Tiwanaku ceremonial centre.

Scholars attribute Pumapunku to the Tiwanaku culture; construction and major use date to the pre-Columbian period when Tiwanaku functioned as a regional ceremonial and political centre. The complex shows phases of construction, reuse and later decline alongside broader changes in the Altiplano.

The ruins lie on the high Andean plateau near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, within the Tiwanaku archaeological zone west of La Paz at high elevation on the Altiplano.

  • Architectural significance: A component of the Tiwanaku archaeological complex, the site is noted for very large, precisely cut stone blocks and unusual H-shaped fittings used in construction.
  • Elevation: Located on the Andean Altiplano at high elevation, the site sits well above 3,500 metres above sea level and is part of a larger ceremonial centre.

What to See #

  • Engineered stone platform: Main stone platform and terrace where precisely cut andesite and sandstone blocks form interlocking joints and orthogonal masonry elements.
  • Relation to Tiwanaku complex: Nearby Tiwanaku complex features such as the Akapana pyramid and Kalasasaya plaza that together form the broader archaeological landscape.
