Pulau Sipadan
Island Small Malaysian island famed for scuba diving walls
Pulau Sipadan, off Sabah, is renowned for wall dives, sea turtles, large schools of fish and occasional pelagic sightings. Diving is regulated; most visitors arrive on organized day trips from nearby islands.
Pulau Sipadan is a small oceanic island off the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia, internationally renowned as a top scuba-diving destination. The island rises from deep water, producing steep coral walls, rich marine life and strong currents that attract large schools of fish and predators.
Divers come for sights such as large schools of barracuda, frequent sea turtles and regular sightings of reef and pelagic sharks at sites like Barracuda Point and the Turtle Tomb. Protection measures limit on-island accommodation and regulate dive access to preserve the reef.
The island formed on an extinct volcanic cone with coral growth on top and has been managed as a protected marine site to reduce impacts from over-visitation and uncontrolled fishing. Access is commonly arranged from nearby Semporna and Mabul.
- Oceanic island: Formed as an oceanic island on top of an extinct volcanic cone, it is Malaysia's only true oceanic island and is famed for pelagic-diving encounters.
What to See #
- Barracuda Point: A famously rich dive site noted for steep coral walls, abundant turtles and regular visits by large pelagic species such as reef and hammerhead sharks.
- Turtle Tomb: A submerged area associated with turtle activity and named for the large numbers of turtles seen there; it is a regular stop on guided dive itineraries.
- Drop Off: A shallow coral area and drop-off used for reef dives and often visited on day trips from nearby islands and mainland dive bases.

Tips for Visiting Pulau Sipadan #
- Remember Sipadan is strictly controlled: you cannot overnight on the island and all visits must be arranged through licensed dive operators based in Semporna or on Mabul-book months ahead, especially peak season.
- Most dive boats depart from Semporna; plan travel and transfers there and expect operators to manage your day permit-don't plan to turn up independently at the island.
- Divers often miss excellent macro sites around nearby Mabul and Kapalai-if you can't secure Sipadan slots, prioritize those resorts for superb muck diving and critter sightings.
- To avoid the busiest dive windows, book early morning dives and consider weekday trips; liveaboards can give earlier entry to Sipadan dive sites than day-boat schedules.
