Pulau Mabul
Island Small Malaysian island renowned for muck diving
A small island off Sabah known among divers for muck diving and proximity to Sipadan; visitors stay in fishing-village guesthouses, go diving on nearby reefs and observe local marine life.
Pulau Mabul is a small island off the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia, known as a base for scuba diving and specialised macro or ‘muck’ diving. It lies in the Semporna archipelago and supports a small resident dive tourism community.
Traditionally a fishing island, Mabul developed visitor infrastructure in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as diving interest in the region grew. It now functions mainly as a dive tourism service hub.
Mabul lies off the southeastern coast of Sabah, near the town of Semporna and close to the protected dive island of Sipadan; access is by boat from Semporna’s jetty.
- Diving gateway: The island is a regional dive base and gateway for trips to nearby Sipadan, popular for macro or 'muck' diving specialties.
- Visitor tip: Accommodation is small-scale and largely visitor-oriented, so book in advance during peak diving season (March-November).
What to See #
- Local village (Kampung Mabul): A small local village built on stilts along the shore provides homestays, guesthouses and basic services for visiting divers and researchers.
- Dive sites and marine life: Multiple shore-based and boat-access dive sites are used for muck and macro diving, noted for rare nudibranchs, frogfish and other small marine species.
How to Get to Pulau Mabul #
Most visitors reach Pulau Mabul via Semporna on mainland Sabah. From Tawau Airport, take the 1.5-2 hour minibus to Semporna town; boats to Mabul depart from Semporna jetty and take roughly 30-45 minutes depending on sea conditions. Boat transfers and island accommodation are commonly sold as packages by dive operators in Semporna.
Tips for Visiting Pulau Mabul #
- Book boat transfers from Semporna in advance, especially during peak diving season (April-October).
- If diving, choose a local operator experienced in muck diving - many marine creatures are tiny and skilled guides make the difference.
- Bring cash; the island's guesthouses and shops are small and often don't accept cards.
