How to Get to Pui O#
Pui O is on Lantau Island (Islands District) and is best reached from Hong Kong International Airport via Tung Chung (MTR/Airport Express) + New Lantao Bus, or by ferry from Central to Mui Wo followed by a short bus/taxi. Public transport connections are regular and well-signed.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG): HKG is the main arrival point. From the airport take the Airport Express to Tung Chung (or a public bus) and then transfer to local New Lantao Bus routes or a taxi to reach Pui O on Lantau Island. Airport → Tung Chung by Airport Express is ~12-15 minutes (single fares vary; purchase options include discounts with Octopus cards). The total HKG → Pui O journey is commonly 35-75 minutes depending on connections.
Heli/charter: Not a typical option for travellers to Pui O; HKG remains the practical gateway.
Train / MTR & Airport Express: Take the Airport Express or Tung Chung line of the MTR to Tung Chung station; from there catch New Lantao Bus route 11 or other local buses toward Pui O (journey from Tung Chung to Pui O ~25-40 minutes). Expect bus fares in the HK$6-15 range depending on route and concessions.
Ferry & local bus: Alternatively, take the ferry from Central (Hong Kong Island) to Mui Wo (operator: ferry services; ~30-40 minutes, fares typically in the HK$25-40 range depending on type), then a short local bus (New Lantao Bus route 1) or taxi to Pui O (~10 minutes). This route is scenic and common for day-trippers.
How to Get Around Pui O#
Use the MTR/Airport Express to Tung Chung plus New Lantao Bus for the most straightforward public route; the ferry via Mui Wo is a scenic alternative. Taxis and bike rentals cover last-mile needs.
- Airport Express + MTR (HK$0-115 (varies by segment - Airport Express to Hong Kong full fare ~HK$115; MTR segments less)) - Fastest rail option from the airport into the Tung Chung area. Use the Airport Express or Tung Chung line then transfer to a bus or taxi for Pui O. Tickets are available at stations and discounts apply when using Octopus cards.
- New Lantao Bus (routes 1, 11 etc.) (HK$6-18) - Primary public-bus network on Lantau connecting Tung Chung, Mui Wo, Pui O, Tai O and other villages. Buses are regular and inexpensive; route numbers differ so check signage. Useful for both short hops and island-wide travel.
- Ferry (Central ↔ Mui Wo) (HK$20-40) - Scenic and reliable option from Central; ferries run frequently during the day and land at Mui Wo; combine with a short bus or taxi to reach Pui O. Fares depend on fast/ordinary services and time of day.
- Taxi / minivan (HK$50-150 (short island transfers)) - Taxis on Lantau are available and convenient if you have luggage or travel late. Note that taxi color/zone rules apply (Lantau taxis operate in the islands). Shared minibuses appear at ferry/terminus points sometimes.
- Bicycle / scooter rental (HK$50-150/day (approx.)) - Pui O and nearby beaches are popular for cycling; rental shops in Mui Wo and Tung Chung offer bicycles. Be cautious on steeper sections and follow local traffic rules.
- Walking - Pui O village and its beach are compact and best explored on foot. There are pleasant walking trails and easy beach access-bring sun protection and water, and expect uneven paths in rural sections.

Shopping in Pui O#
Shopping in Pui O is limited to small convenience stores, cafés and a few beachside stalls. For supermarkets, larger shops or more variety travel to Tung Chung or Mui Wo.
Nightlife in Pui O#
Pui O’s evenings are relaxed rather than busy - a handful of cafés and guesthouse restaurants stay open, especially on weekends. There are no large clubs; for a livelier night scene go to Tung Chung or central Hong Kong.
