Puerta de Toledo is a neoclassical triumphal gate in Madrid that marks an historic southern entrance to the city. It was constructed in the early 19th century as a formal city gate and landmark.
Erected in the 19th century to commemorate events of the period, the gate replaced earlier city gates and became a fixed urban monument as Madrid expanded. It has since remained as a city landmark in its original location.
The Puerta de Toledo stands in Madrid’s southern central area, near the La Latina neighbourhood and the Ronda de Toledo, within easy walking distance of central Madrid sites.
- Location and context: The arch marks one of the historic southern entry points into Madrid and stands close to the Ronda de Toledo traffic ring and La Latina neighbourhood.
