Plaza Mayor is a rectangular public square in central Madrid, Spain, built in the early 17th century during the Habsburg urban development of the city. It is one of Madrid’s principal historic squares and has been a focal point for markets and public life for centuries.

The square is ringed by three-storey residential buildings with arched porticoes at ground level and contains cafes and shops on its perimeter. People frequent the plaza for dining on outdoor terraces, guided walking tours, and public events held on the paved open space.

Construction was overseen in the early 1600s under the direction of the architect Juan Gómez de Mora, commissioned during the reign of Philip III. Over time the square was rebuilt after several fires and has served varied roles including market place, tournament ground and site for public ceremonies.

Plaza Mayor sits in Madrid’s historic Centro district, a short walk from Puerta del Sol and other central landmarks. Its location places it within the compact old town that is well served by public transport and pedestrian streets.

• By car: the area is in a pedestrianised zone in the city centre; parking is limited so arrival by metro, bus or on foot from nearby central locations is recommended.

• Go at dawn for near-empty photos of the square and to see delivery activity and local market setups before the daytime crowds and bus tours arrive.
• Enter from one of the quieter northern or eastern arches (for example from Calle de la Sal or Calle de los Tinajas) to walk directly into the historic core rather than fighting tourist traffic at the main southern side.
• While most visitors focus on the cafés and terraces, take a moment to spot the equestrian statue of Philip III in the centre and the subtle differences in the façades around the square-early visits let you appreciate these details without obstructions.
