The square is about a 5-10 minute walk from Puerta del Sol (Madrid Metro Sol station), so arrive by metro to Sol (lines 1, 2 and 3) or on one of the many central buses and walk west along Calle Mayor to reach the plaza.

• Go first thing in the morning when the square is quiet so you can study the historic facades-Casa de la Villa and Casa de Cisneros are best seen without the mid‑day foot traffic.
• Approach from Calle Mayor to connect easily with other medieval streets of Madrid's old town; exploring the narrow side streets around the plaza reveals details and plaques many passersby miss.
