Ptolemais in Cyrenaica is the name of an ancient Hellenistic and later Roman city on the eastern coast of what is now Libya, represented today by archaeological remains near the modern settlement in Marj District.

The site displays material from Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods, reflecting its development under Hellenistic founders and subsequent incorporation into the Roman provincial system. Ruins include road layouts, building foundations and fragments of public architecture typical of Mediterranean port cities.

The city was established in the Hellenistic era and continued to be occupied and rebuilt through Roman and Byzantine times, serving as a regional port and administrative centre before decline in the medieval period.

The archaeological site sits on the coastal plain of Cyrenaica in northeastern Libya.

Ptolemais is on Libya’s eastern Mediterranean coast in the Marj District.
