Prospect Park (Brooklyn)

Prospect Park is a large urban park in central Brooklyn designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and opened in the late 19th century. It occupies roughly 585 acres and functions as a major recreational and ecological green space for New York City.

Key features include the long, open lawn known as Long Meadow, the designed Prospect Park Lake and extensive naturalistic woodlands and trails. The park contains facilities for sports, concerts and year-round leisure activities, and includes several historic structures and recreational buildings.

Olmsted and Vaux conceived the park as a complement to Manhattan’s Central Park, combining pastoral meadows, formal recreation areas and managed woodlands; construction and planting took place across the late 1800s. Prospect Park sits at the heart of Brooklyn and is bordered by neighbourhoods such as Park Slope, Prospect Heights and Windsor Terrace, with major entrances at Grand Army Plaza and along Prospect Park West.
