Boerum Hill Park

Boerum Hill is a residential neighborhood in north-central Brooklyn, New York City, known for its preserved brownstone houses and low-rise urban fabric. It developed as a working and middle-class area in the 19th century and is now largely residential with local retail streets.

The neighborhood offers short walks along tree-lined streets with brownstones, small local restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops concentrated on corridors such as Smith Street and Atlantic Avenue. Public parks and community gardens punctuate the area and provide recreational space within a compact street grid.

Boerum Hill was named for the Boerum family that owned farmland in the area during Brooklyn’s early development. Residential building expanded in the 19th century with rowhouses and townhouses; the neighborhood later experienced preservation and gentrification from the late 20th century onward.

Boerum Hill sits in north-central Brooklyn, bordered by Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Downtown Brooklyn, a short subway ride from lower Manhattan.

From Manhattan take the 2/3/4/5 or R subway lines to Borough Hall or Nevins Street; the F and G lines also serve nearby stops (Smith-Ninth Streets or Bergen Street), each within a 5-15 minute walk depending on the block.

• Walk north from Atlantic Avenue rather than south from Downtown Brooklyn-Boerum Hill's charm is compact and better savored by foot.
• Look for the narrow row houses with cast-iron stoops and bowed brownstone facades-there are more surviving 19th-century details than many expect.
• Avoid the busiest weekend hours on Atlantic and Bergen if seeking quiet cafés-weekday mornings are when locals still read newspapers at the counter.
