The Pratas Islands, also known as Dongsha, are an atoll and group of reefs in the northern South China Sea administered by Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City. The feature includes a single larger cay with supporting facilities and an enclosed lagoon ringed by coral reefs.

The atoll is protected for its marine biodiversity and reef systems and has been designated as a national park and marine reserve. The environment comprises shallow lagoon habitat, reef flats and deeper slopes that support coral assemblages and reef fishes.

The islands are administered by Taiwan and are visited only with authorisation; a small garrison and park staff maintain presence on the main cay. The atoll lies in the northern South China Sea, several hundred kilometres southwest of Taiwan’s main island.

  • Administration and access: Administered by Taiwan (Kaohsiung City) and designated a marine national park, access is restricted and typically requires permits from Taiwanese authorities.

What to See #

  • Pratas Island (main cay): The main coral cay and islet with an airstrip, lighthouse and limited inhabited facilities that serve park staff and garrison personnel.
  • Atoll lagoon and reef: The surrounding atoll and lagoon containing coral reef systems and deeper reef slopes that are the primary focus of marine conservation and diving activities.
