Prades Mountains
Mountain Catalan mountain range popular for hiking
A limestone range west of Tarragona, the Prades Mountains offer pine forests, marked hiking routes and medieval villages; visitors come for walking, cycling and rural Catalan villages.
The Prades Mountains (Muntanyes de Prades) are a compact limestone massif in inland southwestern Catalonia, centred on the village of Prades. The range forms a distinctive highland block of wooded ridges, cliffs and karst plateaus.
Walkers find a network of trails through chestnut and oak woods, rocky outcrops and open summits, with viewpoints across the surrounding plains and towards the Costa Daurada. The highest summit, Tossal de la Baltasana, is the main objective for panoramic views and is served by marked tracks.
The area has a long history of human settlement from prehistoric times through the medieval period, with terraced agriculture and scattered villages adapting to the rugged terrain. Traditional rural uses continue alongside recreational tourism.
The massif lies inland in the province of Tarragona and is centred on the town of Prades, which provides access and accommodation for visitors to the mountains.
- Highest elevation: The highest point reaches about 1,201 metres, making it the dominant summit on the massif and a marked destination on local maps.
