Roca dels Moros Archaeological Site

Roca dels Moros is a prehistoric rock-art site in Catalonia, Spain, notable for painted panels depicting human and animal figures and ritual scenes.

The site presents exposed painted panels on a rock face showing stylized human figures, animals and symbolic motifs executed in pigments; panels are displayed and protected at the site for public viewing. Panels like the well-known painted scene attract interest from scholars of Iberian prehistoric art and from visitors interested in ancient rock art.

The paintings were created in prehistory and are classified with Levantine and other Iberian rock-art traditions; they were recorded and studied by archaeologists from the 19th and 20th centuries onward and are conserved as archaeological heritage.

Situated in Catalonia, the site lies in a rural setting within the province that contains several other rock-art sites across the Ebro basin and surrounding plateaus.

Public buses that serve small rural villages may run from Lleida to nearby towns, but services are infrequent - if using public transport, travel to El Cogul or the nearest larger village and finish by taxi or on foot.

• Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best light on the panels and to avoid the midday heat and busiest coach visits.
• Follow the marked footpath from the village (El Cogul) and stick to barriers-the rock art is fragile and the viewing platform gives the best perspective without risking the panels.
• Check opening times of the local interpretation/visitor information in El Cogul before you go; short guided talks or panels there explain motifs that many casual visitors overlook.
