Praça da Sé

Square Historic cathedral square in central São Paulo

Praça da Sé marks São Paulo’s colonial-era centre beside the cathedral; tourists come for the cathedral, street markets, historic façades and the hectic pulse of the city’s core.

Main image

Praça da Sé is the principal central square of São Paulo, located in the Sé district and dominated by the city’s cathedral. It functions as both a civic focal point and the traditional geographic centre of São Paulo.

The square is best known for the prominent Catedral da Sé, the large neo-Gothic church whose present building dates from the first half of the 20th century and was consecrated in 1954. The plaza also contains the city’s Marco Zero stone that serves as the kilometre-zero reference for São Paulo and is immediately adjacent to busy shopping streets and the historic core.

As a transport and commercial hub the square sees heavy pedestrian traffic, street vendors and civic events; it is served by the Sé metro station which links central São Paulo with the wider city. The open paved plaza and cathedral forecourt are the main visitor attractions and photographic viewpoints.

The site has been the religious and administrative heart of the city since the colonial and republican eras, with the current cathedral replacing earlier church buildings on the same site. The square has evolved with the urban expansion of São Paulo and remains a primary orientation point in the city centre.

  • City centre location: The plaza marks the historical and geographic centre of São Paulo and sits adjacent to major shopping streets including Rua 25 de Março.
  • Best time to visit: Peak activity is during weekday mornings and late afternoons when commuters and shoppers concentrate around the cathedral and transport links.
