How to Get to Portorož#
Portorož is best reached via Trieste (TRS) or Ljubljana (LJU) then by bus or car along the Istrian coast. The town is a coastal resort with good summer bus links from Trieste and Koper and limited rail access directly into the town.
Trieste - Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport (TRS): TRS is the closest Italian airport to Portorož (about 35-45 minutes by road). From TRS take a bus or taxi to Trieste and then regional buses to Koper/Portorož; a taxi from TRS to Portorož typically takes ~40-50 minutes and costs around €50-€70.
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU): Ljubljana is a larger hub (about 1.5 hours by road to Portorož). From LJU you can take a direct FlixBus or regional bus to Koper/Portorož (journey ~1.5-2 hours) or hire a car; bus fares are usually in the €10-€20 range.
Train: The nearest mainline station is Koper (via nearby rail/bus hubs); Slovenia’s rail network does not reach Portorož directly. Arrive by train to nearby stations (e.g., Koper area) and continue by bus or taxi.
Bus: Regular regional buses connect Trieste, Koper and Portorož/Piran. From Trieste or Koper the bus ride to Portorož is typically 30-60 minutes and fares are generally €3-€8 depending on the route. Summer services are frequent to serve the resort traffic.

Trieste and Ljubljana are the main gateways; from there regional buses or a hired car are the best ways to reach Portorož. In summer public transport is frequent and convenient for visitors.

- Taxi / private transfer (€40-€80) - Taxis and private transfers are the fastest way from airports and offer door‑to‑door convenience, especially for groups or luggage. Expect higher fares than buses but a significantly shorter journey time.
- Car hire (€25-€70/day) - Renting a car is convenient for exploring Istria and the Slovenian coast; roads are well signposted and parking in Portorož is easier than in neighbouring Piran. Summer traffic and parking fees apply.
- Ferry / boat (seasonal) (€8-€25) - In summer there are boat services and excursions around the Gulf of Piran; these are leisure options rather than core transport but can link nearby coastal towns.
