Piran City
Coastal city in Slovenia, known for tourism
Stone alleys funnel to Tartini Square and the sea in Piran; visitors linger over seafood risotto, climb the bell tower for harbour views, and walk salt pans toward nearby Portorož.
Why Visit Piran?#
Perched on a narrow Adriatic promontory, Piran enchants with Venetian architecture and seaside charm. Tartini Square and the bell tower of St. George’s Church anchor the compact old town, and the nearby Sečovlje Saltworks add a salt‑harvesting tradition to explore. Fresh seafood and Mediterranean flavors dominate the restaurants along the marina. Narrow lanes and sunset views over the Gulf of Trieste create an intimate coastal atmosphere.

How to Get Around Piran#
To reach Piran use Koper or Trieste as arrival hubs and finish the trip by short local bus or shuttle. Once there, the old town is pedestrianised so buses, boats and walking cover most travel needs.
- Local & intercity buses (€1.5-15) - Buses from Koper, Portorož and Ljubljana are the most common way to reach Piran. Local trips (Koper-Piran) are short and cheap, while longer transfers (Ljubljana-Piran) take 1.5-2 hours. In high season buses can be busy - arrive early for popular departures.
- Ferry & water taxis (€5-20) - Seasonal boat services and water taxis operate between Piran, Portorož and nearby coastal points. These are pleasant alternatives in summer for short transfers and sightseeing; fares vary by route and operator.
- Taxi & private transfer (€20-50+) - Useful for direct door‑to‑door travel from airports or for late arrivals. Expect higher fares than buses, especially for cross‑border transfers from Trieste.
- Car hire (€30+/day) - Hiring a car gives flexibility to explore the Slovenian coast and interior; note that Piran’s old town has narrow streets and limited parking - use larger car parks on the town edge and walk in.
- Bicycle (€8-15/day) - Piran and the nearby coast are pleasant to explore by bike outside peak heat; some accommodations offer rentals. Roads around the town are short but can be hilly on nearby routes.
- Walking - Piran’s compact medieval centre is best experienced on foot - most streets are pedestrianised and walking is the only practical way to get around the old town.
