The Portland Japanese Garden is a traditional-style Japanese garden located within Washington Park in southwest Portland, Oregon, established in the 1960s and widely regarded as one of North America’s significant Japanese gardens. The site covers about 5.5 acres and includes several distinct garden types and exhibition spaces.
A Strolling Pond Garden, Tea Garden, Sand and Stone and Flat Garden areas, a bonsai collection and an onsite cultural facility that hosts exhibitions and programs. The garden presents seasonal plantings and designed viewpoints rather than large open lawns, and it stages cultural demonstrations and guided tours for visitors.
The garden began as a community and civic project in the 1960s and has been expanded and developed through donations and public support into a professionally managed, non-profit cultural institution. How to Get to Portland Japanese Garden #
Located in Washington Park, the garden is adjacent to the International Rose Test Garden and the Oregon Zoo. From downtown Portland, take the TriMet MAX light rail (Red Line) to the Washington Park station and walk approximately 10-15 minutes through the park, or drive - there is limited paid parking near the entrance.
