Pioneer Courthouse Square is a one-block public plaza in downtown Portland, Oregon, that opened in 1984 and is commonly called “Portland’s living room.” The square functions as a civic gathering place and hosts a wide range of public events.

The paved brick plaza includes a small amphitheater-style seating area and open space used for performances, markets and rallies; it hosts about 300 events annually. The site also contains public art including the well-known bronze “Umbrella Man” sculpture and provides frequent informal meeting points.

The square was created after a public fundraising campaign to replace an underused site and has since served as a focal point for civic life in Portland. It is managed as an urban public space with year-round programming and maintenance.

Located in the heart of downtown Portland, the square sits adjacent to the historic Pioneer Courthouse and is within easy walking distance of transit, shops and restaurants in the central business district.
