Ponte de D. Maria Pia
Monument 19th-century iron railway bridge spanning the Douro in Porto
19th-century iron railway bridge near Porto designed by Gustave Eiffel; visited by those interested in engineering history and for riverine views of the Douro.
Ponte de D. Maria Pia is a 19th-century iron railway bridge that spans the Douro River at Porto, Portugal. Engineered by Théophile Seyrig for Eiffel’s company and opened in 1877, it was a major example of late 19th-century metal arch bridge design.
The bridge provided a railway link between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia and was notable for its long central arch and wrought-iron construction. Although it carried trains for more than a century, it was superseded for mainline rail traffic in the late 20th century and is now preserved as a historic structure adjacent to newer crossings.
The structure was built in the 1870s as part of the region’s railway expansion; its design and construction are credited to Seyrig working within Eiffel’s firm, and it remained in regular use until replaced by modern bridges. Over time the bridge has become appreciated as an industrial-era landmark in the Porto riverfront ensemble.
The bridge crosses the Douro near Porto’s historic centre, linking the city with Vila Nova de Gaia on the south bank. It sits among several major Douro crossings and is visible from riverfront viewpoints in central Porto.
