The building combines a Romanesque core with Gothic and later Baroque modifications; significant internal elements include a Gothic cloister and richly decorated chapels added in subsequent centuries. The cathedral remains an active seat of the diocese and is noted for its architectural layering spanning medieval to early modern periods.

Construction began in the 12th century with major additions and renovations over the following centuries, reflecting changing liturgical and stylistic needs. The cloister dates largely to the 14th century while interior decorative campaigns continued into the 17th and 18th centuries.

Geographically the cathedral sits on a steep hill above Porto’s Ribeira riverside district, close to the Douro River and within the city’s historic core, making it easily reachable on foot from central Porto.

It’s a short walk from São Bento railway station (roughly 5-10 minutes, about 300-500 m) and about a 10-15 minute walk from the Trindade/central metro area. By car/taxi it’s around 10-15 minutes from Porto city centre; from Porto Airport expect roughly a 20-30 minute drive (about 11-12 km) depending on traffic.

• Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid cruise-ship and midday tourist crowds and to get softer, more photogenic light on the cathedral's façade and the narrow streets below.
• Buy a ticket that includes the cloister/terrace (check on-site or the cathedral's official information) so you can access the upper terraces for panoramic views over the Douro and the Ribeira - many visitors miss the rooftop perspectives.
• Allow time to explore the winding lanes around the cathedral and the adjacent Sé square; approaching from the steep streets of the Vila Nova de Gaia side or from the Cathedral's Praça da Sé gives different vantage points and tends to be less busy than the main tourist routes.
