Mountains Slovenian mountain range known for forests and ski resorts
Pohorje is a forested Slovenian massif offering ski slopes near Maribor, marked hiking and cycling trails, peat bogs and lookout points across rolling ridgelines.
Pohorje (the Pohorje Massif) is a forested mountain range in northeastern Slovenia characterised by rounded peaks, peat bogs and coniferous woodland; its higher elevations reach roughly 1,400-1,550 metres. The area combines recreational infrastructure with protected natural habitats.
Popular activities include downhill and cross-country skiing in winter, and hiking, mountain biking and trail running in summer. Notable developed centres such as Rogla and the Maribor-Pohorje ski area provide lifts, pistes and visitor facilities.

Tips for Visiting Pohorje #
- Use the Maribor-Pohorje cable car or start from lesser-used trailheads around Ruše for quicker access to the plateau and to avoid the busiest resort trails near Rogla and Maribor.
- Visit outside peak winter-ski and midsummer weekend periods-late spring and early autumn offer quieter trails and clearer mountain views while avoiding crowded lift lines.
- Seek out marked nature reserves and peat-bog areas on Pohorje (check local trail maps at tourist offices) - these habitats are easy to miss from the main ridgeline but rewarding for birdwatching and plant interest.
Best Time to Visit Pohorje #
Best visited in summer for hiking and clear trails, or winter for skiing - choose season based on the activity you want.
