Playa de Las Canteras
Beach Urban Las Palmas beach known for long protective reef
Las Canteras is the long urban beach of Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. Surfers, swimmers and snorkelers use its reefs and breakers; a seaside promenade lines cafés and seafood restaurants.
Playa de Las Canteras is the principal urban beach of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, stretching for about 3 kilometres along the city’s northeastern coastline. It is protected by a natural offshore reef that moderates waves and creates varied swimming and surfing zones.
The beach is lined by a wide seafront promenade with cafés, bars and services, and it terminates at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus to the west. The sheltered inner waters formed by the reef are popular for family swimming and snorkeling, while sections exposed to the Atlantic attract surfers.
The modern recreational layout developed through 20th-century urban expansion as Las Palmas grew; facilities and promenades were progressively added to serve residents and tourists. Bathing platforms, lifeguard stations and rental services are standard along the sand.
The beach sits on the northeast shore of Gran Canaria within the city of Las Palmas, facing the Atlantic; it lies minutes from the city centre and is connected by local roads and public transit.
- Length and conditions: The beach extends roughly 3 kilometres along the urban coastline of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, offering both sheltered swimming areas and surf zones depending on tide and wind.
- Swimming and surfing areas: The reef creates calm inner waters suitable for families and snorkeling, while the outer beach can produce surfable waves favored by surfers in appropriate conditions.
What to See #
- La Barra reef: The long sandy shore and offshore reef known locally as the "La Barra" that shelters the bay and creates calm swimming areas along much of the beach.
- Paseo de Las Canteras: The Paseo de Las Canteras, an extensive seafront promenade running most of the beach's 3-kilometre length and lined with cafés, restaurants and public spaces.
- Auditorio Alfredo Kraus: The Auditorio Alfredo Kraus at the western end of the beach, a concrete concert hall and cultural centre that marks the beach's western boundary.
