Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance are an 18th-century urban ensemble in Nancy, France, recognized for their coherent classical planning and ornate civic architecture. The complex was developed under Duke Stanislas Leszczyński and is a UNESCO World Heritage property.
The ensemble comprises three connected squares with uniform façades, decorative wrought-iron gates, fountains and statuary; Place Stanislas is the most decorative with gilded elements and central fountain. Public life, open-air events and pedestrian promenades animate the squares, making them a focal point of Nancy’s historic centre.
Commissioned in the mid-18th century by Stanislas Leszczyński, the squares were laid out between roughly 1750 and 1760 as part of a program to modernize and unify the city. The design exemplifies enlightened urban planning of the period and has been preserved and restored over subsequent centuries.
