Place Royale, Brussels

Place Royale (French) / Koningsplein (Dutch) is a neoclassical public square on the Coudenberg plateau in central Brussels, created in the late 18th century on the site of the former Coudenberg palace. It is an established civic and cultural axis in the city, framed by classical façades and institutional buildings.

On and around the square visitors can see neoclassical architecture and access nearby museums and cultural sites; the square functions as a formal open space linking upper and lower areas of central Brussels. It is also used for official ceremonies and public gatherings.

The present square was laid out after the medieval Coudenberg palace was lost and a planned neoclassical ensemble was erected; construction and urban reorganization took place in the late 1700s and into the 19th century. The church and surrounding buildings date from that neoclassical rebuilding phase.

The square occupies a central position on the Coudenberg plateau in the Brussels-City municipality, immediately above the Mont des Arts and a short walk from Brussels Park and the Royal Palace. It is within the historic core of Brussels.
