Plaça del Rei

Plaça del Rei is a compact medieval square in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, known for its well-preserved medieval buildings and direct association with the city’s royal and civic history. It is a concentrated ensemble of medieval architecture and museum spaces.

The square is surrounded by the Palau Reial Major and associated medieval structures, including the Capella de Santa Àgata and the Saló del Tinell, and provides access to the Museu d’Història de Barcelona’s archaeological displays. The cobbled square and stone façades date largely from the medieval period and are a focal point for architectural study and museum visits.

Established in the medieval period as the royal and administrative quarter, the site housed Barcelona’s principal royal residence and ceremonial halls; later archaeological excavations revealed Roman and medieval remains beneath the square. The ensemble has been conserved and interpreted for visitors through the city history museum.

Set within the Gothic Quarter of Ciutat Vella, the square lies a short walk from the cathedral and other central historic streets in Barcelona.
