Piz Cengalo Mountain

Piz Cengalo is a steep, glaciated mountain in the Bregaglia (Bregaglia Range) in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It is a prominent granite peak noted for its steep north and northeast faces popular with experienced alpinists.

The mountain offers technical climbing routes and dramatic alpine scenery; approaches are typically from the Val Bregaglia and nearby mountain huts or valley villages. The area’s terrain includes steep rock faces, ice, and loose rock that requires alpine experience and caution.

Piz Cengalo has long been part of the local mountaineering routes in the Bregaglia Range. In recent decades the mountain has produced several significant rockfalls and collapses that have altered routes and prompted monitoring and valley evacuations.

The peak rises above the Val Bregaglia in southeastern Switzerland, near the village of Bondo, and is part of the Graubünden alpine region close to the border with Italy.

• Climbing and rockfall hazard: Known for steep granite faces popular with experienced climbers and for major rockfalls in recent years that have affected access to alpine routes and valley settlements below.

• Go very early in the morning in summer (first light) for firmer rock/ice conditions and to avoid afternoon convective storms that commonly develop in the Alps; alpine routes on Piz Cengalo are technical and are best attempted at first light.
• Because Piz Cengalo has a history of large rockfalls, check current hazard notices and recent route reports from the Swiss Alpine Club or local mountain guides before planning any approach or climb and consider hiring a certified guide if you're not an experienced alpinist.
• If you don't intend to climb, view the mountain safely from nearby villages such as Soglio or from marked valley trails in the Bregaglia - those viewpoints give dramatic photos of the north face without entering hazardous terrain.
