Pitane was an ancient Aeolian city on the Aegean coast of Anatolia, located in what is now İzmir Province, Turkey. It was one of the Greek settlements of the Aeolic Greeks and functioned as a coastal polis in antiquity.

Archaeological remains and references in classical sources attest to its role in the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods, with typical urban structures of an ancient Greek city. The coastal position gave it access to maritime trade routes in the Aegean.

Over time Pitane passed through Hellenistic and Roman administration and its remains became part of the layered archaeological landscape of the region; much of the ancient coastline activity shifted to nearby later settlements.

The ancient site sits on the western Anatolian coast near the modern town of Çandarlı and the Aegean shoreline of İzmir Province, among a landscape of small coastal plains and low hills.

  • Location: The site corresponds to the classical city of Pitane in the Aeolian region, and its remains are near the modern Aegean coast of İzmir Province.
