Pirelli Tower
Building Landmark Milan skyscraper and symbol of postwar architecture
The Pirelli Tower in Milan is a mid‑20th‑century modernist skyscraper and regional government office; architects and design‑minded visitors note its slender profile and post‑war concrete‑and‑glass aesthetic in the Porta Nuova area.
The Pirelli Tower (Grattacielo Pirelli) is a landmark skyscraper in Milan and one of Italy’s early high-rise modernist buildings, completed around 1960. The tower was originally constructed as the headquarters of the Pirelli company and later came to house regional government offices.
Designed by Gio Ponti with engineering collaboration from leading structural designers of the period, the building is noted for its slim rectangular profile and curtain-wall façade. Its height and modern construction made it a distinctive addition to Milan’s mid-20th-century skyline.
The tower sits in the northern part of central Milan and is integrated into the city’s business and transport network.
- Architectural significance: The tower is an early example of modern Italian skyscraper design and is often cited as a landmark of post-war Milanese architecture.
