Pilanesberg is a large protected game reserve in the North West province of South Africa, centred on an extinct alkaline volcanic complex that forms a roughly circular ring of hills. The area is managed as a national park-scale wildlife reserve supporting diverse savanna habitats and large mammal populations.

Visitors encounter a network of gravel roads, hides and picnic sites used for wildlife viewing, with guided and self-drive safaris yielding sightings of elephants, lions, buffalo, rhinos and leopards alongside plains species. The ring-shaped hills provide scenic ridgelines and concentrated habitat variation that influences animal distribution and viewing opportunities.

Previously used for agriculture and local settlement, the area was converted into a managed game reserve during the late 20th century with active species reintroduction and habitat restoration to create a viable wildlife area. Park infrastructure and conservation programs have developed to support tourism and biodiversity protection.

Many visitors drive themselves or use organized transfers; signposted access roads lead from the main regional routes to the park entrances and lodges.

Within the reserve, game drives and internal roads are used to move between camps and viewpoints; a suitable vehicle or booked safari transfer is recommended.

• Visit during the dry winter months (May-September) and head out on the early‑morning or late‑afternoon game drives when animals concentrate at waterholes and viewing is best.
• If you want more sightings and fewer people at popular hides, book an overnight stay inside or adjacent to the park and join guided drives-self‑drive can be good, but ranger‑led drives markedly increase chances of seeing shy species.
