Pilanesberg

Pilanesberg is a large protected game reserve in the North West province of South Africa, centred on an extinct alkaline volcanic complex that forms a roughly circular ring of hills. The area is managed as a national park-scale wildlife reserve supporting diverse savanna habitats and large mammal populations.

Visitors encounter a network of gravel roads, hides and picnic sites used for wildlife viewing, with guided and self-drive safaris yielding sightings of elephants, lions, buffalo, rhinos and leopards alongside plains species. The ring-shaped hills provide scenic ridgelines and concentrated habitat variation that influences animal distribution and viewing opportunities.

Previously used for agriculture and local settlement, the area was converted into a managed game reserve during the late 20th century with active species reintroduction and habitat restoration to create a viable wildlife area.
