Pilanesberg
Mountains Ringed volcanic hills national park with abundant wildlife
National park occupying a fossil volcanic ring near Sun City, offering Big Five game drives, varied habitats and lodges; one of South Africa’s main safari destinations.
Pilanesberg is a large protected game reserve in the North West province of South Africa, centred on an extinct alkaline volcanic complex that forms a roughly circular ring of hills. The area is managed as a national park-scale wildlife reserve supporting diverse savanna habitats and large mammal populations.
Visitors encounter a network of gravel roads, hides and picnic sites used for wildlife viewing, with guided and self-drive safaris yielding sightings of elephants, lions, buffalo, rhinos and leopards alongside plains species. The ring-shaped hills provide scenic ridgelines and concentrated habitat variation that influences animal distribution and viewing opportunities.
Previously used for agriculture and local settlement, the area was converted into a managed game reserve during the late 20th century with active species reintroduction and habitat restoration to create a viable wildlife area. Park infrastructure and conservation programs have developed to support tourism and biodiversity protection.
The reserve sits in the Pilanesberg area of North West province, roughly 150 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg and adjacent to tourist developments in the region.
- Proximity to Johannesburg: The park lies about 150 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg and is commonly visited as a 2- to 3-hour drive from the city, often combined with nearby tourist facilities.
- Wildlife viewing: Wildlife management reintroductions restored populations of the Big Five and other species; game drives and self-drive routes allow sightings across the reserve.

- Visit during the dry winter months (May-September) and head out on the early‑morning or late‑afternoon game drives when animals concentrate at waterholes and viewing is best.
