Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore protects a stretch of Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and is best known for its colorful sandstone cliffs and sculpted coastal formations. The lakeshore was designated by Congress in 1966 to preserve these coastal features and surrounding forests.
Key attractions include multicolored cliffs and sea caves that extend along roughly 42 miles of shoreline and rise in places to about 200 feet above the lake. Visitors commonly view the cliffs by boat cruises from Munising, by sea kayak for experienced paddlers, or by hiking trails that access overlooks and shoreline points.
Congress established the lakeshore in 1966 to conserve the scenic, geological and recreational values of the area. Since then the unit has been managed for visitor access, shoreline protection and habitat conservation.
The park lies on the southern shore of Lake Superior in Alger County between the communities of Munising and Grand Marais in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with shoreline access points and trailheads near those towns.

Tips for Visiting Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore #
- Aim for early morning (calm winds) to see the cliffs reflected in Lake Superior and to beat day-trip boat-tour crowds; Munising is the main launch point for most Pictured Rocks cruises, so arrive there early if you plan a boat tour.
- If you're driving the lakeshore, stop at the Miners Castle and Sand Point areas before mid-morning-parking at the most popular overlooks fills quickly, and several smaller pullouts along H-58/M‑94 offer excellent, less-crowded vantage points.
- Consider a guided kayak tour or a supervised multiday paddle from Munising to get close to sea caves and alcoves many visitors never see from the boat cruise; check tour operator schedules and lake conditions in advance.
