Pictured Rocks
Cliff Scenic sandstone cliffs and sea caves along Lake Superior
Section of Lake Superior coastline famed for colorful sandstone cliffs and sea-carved formations; visitors arrive for boat cruises, kayaking, waterfalls and hiking trails along the lakeshore.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a protected U.S. National Lakeshore on the southern shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, designated by Congress in 1966 to preserve its scenic sandstone shoreline and coastal features.
The shoreline contains multicolored sandstone cliffs that stretch along roughly 15 miles of immediate cliff face and rise as high as about 200 feet in places, producing mineral streaks and banding. Sea caves, arches, and rock formations such as Miners Castle are visible from water or from coastal overlooks, and the park includes waterfalls and sandy beaches that draw hikers and kayakers.
Beyond the cliffs, the park protects coastal dune fields and forested interior land including the Grand Sable Dunes, with a network of trails used for day hikes and sections of the long-distance North Country Trail. Boat cruises and kayak trips from the nearby gateway town give access to sea caves and cliff faces that are difficult to view from land.
Federally protected in 1966, the area contains historic maritime facilities and light stations that reflect Lake Superior shipping history. Management since designation has focused on balancing visitor access with protection of shoreline geology, forests, and cultural sites.
The park sits on Lake Superior in Alger County; the town of Munising serves as the primary gateway and launch point for water-based tours and trailheads. The nearest larger regional city is Marquette to the west, and road access to trailheads and overlooks is concentrated near Munising.
- Boat tours: Boat cruises from Munising provide the easiest close-up views of the multicolored cliffs and sea caves during the navigation season.
- Best time to visit: Summer offers the most reliable access for boat and trail activities, while early fall showcases strong autumn color along inland trails.
- Good viewing points: Miners Castle and several roadside overlooks provide short, accessible viewpoints of the cliffs without long hikes.
What to See #
- Miners Castle: A distinctive sea-stack and overlook along the sandstone cliffs; accessible by short trails and visible from boat tours for close coastal views.
- Munising Falls: A waterfall within the park reached by a short trail from Munising; the falls drop into a small gorge and are a common short-visit stop.
- Grand Sable Dunes: A broad field of wind-blown sand adjacent to the lakeshore that forms a shifting dune landscape above the shoreline and is reached by a hiking trail and parking area.
- Au Sable Point Light: A historic light station located on the lakeshore inside the park boundaries, preserved as a cultural site and visible from nearby trails.
