Pico Basilé National Park
National Park Protected area on Bioko surrounding the island's highest peak
Mountain rainforest park on Bioko Island with Pico Basilé rising to the summit; attracts hikers and birdwatchers seeking endemic species and highland trails.
Pico Basilé National Park protects the central highland area of Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea and includes the island’s highest peak, Pico Basilé. The park conserves montane and cloud-forest environments that differ from the lowland habitats around the island.
Trails and mountain roads lead into high-elevation forest and scrub on the slopes of the island’s central massif, with opportunities to see endemic birds, plant species and varied forest types as altitude increases. The summit area reaches roughly 3,000 metres and provides landscape views when weather permits.
The area has long been recognised for its distinct flora and fauna and was set aside to conserve the island’s montane ecosystems and water catchments. Conservation activities focus on protecting endemic species and limiting habitat loss from agricultural expansion.
The park occupies the central highlands of Bioko Island in Bioko Norte province, a short distance inland from the regional capital Malabo on the island’s northern coast.
- High-elevation habitats: Elevations approach 3,000 metres, creating distinct montane and cloud-forest ecosystems that host endemic plant and bird species.
- Access and conditions: Access to the park is typically via Bioko's road network from the provincial capital Malabo; weather can change rapidly at higher elevations, so plan accordingly.
What to See #
- Pico Basilé summit: The summit area of the island's highest mountain, reaching roughly 3,012 metres, which supports montane and cloud forest habitats distinct from lower elevations.
Tips for Visiting Pico Basilé National Park #
- Base yourself in Malabo and arrange park entry and guided walks through licensed local guides-park access and trail conditions change, and guides markedly improve your chances of seeing endemic species.
