Pico Basilé
Mountain Volcanic peak and Bioko's highest point
Pico Basile rises over Bioko Island with cloud‑forest trails, endemic birdlife and panoramic viewpoints toward the Gulf of Guinea; guided treks usually start from island villages.
Pico Basilé is the highest mountain in Equatorial Guinea, an extinct volcanic peak on Bioko island reaching about 3,011 metres above sea level. The mountain forms a dominant central highland and supports montane and cloud forest ecosystems.
Trails and rough routes lead into wooded slopes and higher moorland near the summit, and the area is noted for endemic flora and bird species. The peak lies within protected land that preserves much of the island’s interior habitat.
Pico Basilé is located on Bioko island in the Gulf of Guinea, roughly 18 kilometres south of the capital, Malabo, and is a prominent landmark visible from the island’s northern coast.
- Elevation: Rises to an elevation of about 3,011 metres and is the highest point in Equatorial Guinea.
How to Get to Pico Basilé #
Fly to Malabo on Bioko Island (Malabo International Airport), which is the usual gateway to Pico Basilé. From Malabo hire a local taxi or 4x4 to reach the park roads that enter Pico Basilé National Park; local guides are recommended and the summit requires a multi‑hour hike from the trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Pico Basilé #
- Visit Pico Basilé early in the morning when the cloud layer is usually lowest-you stand the best chance of clear summit views before the cloud forest mists build up later in the day.
- Approach from Malabo: most organized trips and the main access roads start on the Malabo side of Bioko, so base logistics there and arrange a 4x4 or local guide for the steep, sometimes rough road sections.
- Don't rush past the lower elevations-many visitors miss the rich cloud-forest wildlife and endemic birds en route; allow time for birdwatching stops and short walks below the summit.
- To avoid other visitors, plan a weekday ascent and depart the summit area right after sunrise; guided groups tend to arrive later in the morning, so an early start gives quieter trails.
Best Time to Visit Pico Basilé #
Best visited in the drier months (December-February) when trails and summit views are most reliable.
