Piazza Mercanti

Piazza Mercanti is a historic medieval square in central Milan, situated close to the modern Piazza del Duomo. It was the city’s commercial and administrative centre during the Middle Ages.

Around the compact square are several well-preserved medieval and Renaissance buildings arranged tightly around the plaza, creating an intimate historical ensemble. The space includes civic halls, covered loggias and narrow historic houses that illustrate Milan’s civic architecture from the 13th to 15th centuries.

The square developed in the medieval period as a focal point for markets, guild offices and municipal administration; many surrounding buildings served judicial, mercantile and public functions. Over time the area retained its historic layout even as Milan expanded around it.

Set in the historic centre of Milan in Lombardy, the square lies a short walk east of Piazza del Duomo and is accessible on foot from the main pedestrian routes of the city centre.
