Piazza delle Erbe is Verona’s historic market square and occupies the site of the city’s ancient Roman forum in the heart of the historic centre. It is lined by historic palaces, merchant houses and a mix of cafes and market stalls.

Principal features include a central fountain often referred to as the Madonna Verona, the medieval Torre dei Lamberti which provides panoramic views from its observation platform, and Baroque and Renaissance facades such as Palazzo Maffei. The square functions today as both a tourist attraction and a daily market place for locals.

The piazza’s long history as Verona’s commercial and civic heart is visible in the layered architecture and surviving medieval street plan. It remains one of the city’s most visited public spaces.

Piazza delle Erbe is in Verona’s historic centre, a short walk from the Arena and Verona Porta Nuova station. The square is pedestrianised and accessible on foot from most central points.

• Sit with a coffee on the square's steps early in the morning before market stalls appear-watch the bakers set out produce.
• Look for the small house-shaped fountain, Fontana di Madonna Verona, and the 14th-century fresco fragments embedded in façades.
• Visit the nearby Torre dei Lamberti for panoramic views over the square and the Adige.
