Pi-Ramesses
Archaeological Site Ancient Egyptian capital of Ramesses II, archaeological site
Located near Qantir in Egypt’s Nile Delta, Pi-Ramesses served as Ramesses II’s capital in the 13th century BCE. Archaeological trenches and relocated stone fragments draw visitors interested in Ramesside monuments and Nile Delta settlements.
Pi-Ramesses was the 19th-dynasty royal capital established by Pharaoh Ramesses II in the northeastern Nile Delta during the 13th century BC. The ancient city’s remains are now identified with the modern site of Qantir in Sharqia Governorate, Egypt.
On-site traces include large mudbrick building platforms, streets and industrial areas that reflect a major administrative and military capital rather than a compact temple town. Archaeological work has uncovered evidence of palatial complexes and specialised workshops used for chariotry and supplies.
Ramesses II founded and built up the city as his dynastic capital in the 13th century BC; it remained important during the late Ramesside period but declined and was largely abandoned when the Nile branches shifted and silt altered navigable channels in the first millennium BC. Modern Egyptological research in the 20th century identified Qantir as the probable location of Pi-Ramesses through pottery, inscriptions and architecture.
The site lies in the eastern Nile Delta at Qantir, in Sharqia Governorate, northeast of Cairo and within the flat agricultural landscape of the delta floor. It is reached by road from regional centres and is part of a wider landscape of Delta-period sites.
- Site character: The archaeological site is extensive and mostly visible as low mudbrick platforms and cleared stone foundations, so much of the architecture is readable only through excavation.
What to See #
- Ramesside administrative and palace area: An extensive spread of mudbrick and stone remains identified as palatial, administrative and industrial complexes associated with the 19th-dynasty capital; many foundations and ash layers survive across the site.
- Workshops and chariot facilities: Areas interpreted as workshops and chariot depots that attest to the city's military and logistical role during the reign of Ramesses II and his successors.
How to Get to Pi-Ramesses #
Pi-Ramesses’ largest concentration of remains is around modern Qantir in Sharqia Governorate, roughly 60-80 km northeast of Cairo by road. Access is easiest by car from Cairo or Zagazig; coordinate through Cairo-based archaeology/tour operators for on-site guidance and permissions.
Tips for Visiting Pi-Ramesses #

- Expect agricultural landscapes and modern villages on arrival - the remains are often found under fields.
- Research recent excavations before visiting: the site's material has been moved and repurposed since antiquity.
